Zen practice is really a life practice. It is something that we do. For many people, this is easiest when they can meditate and study the Buddhadharma as part of a  sangha (community). Over a period of time, the support and encouragement of our teachers and other sangha members begins to show us where we are stuck in our opinions and attitudes. This insight can help us “put it all down.” This kind of living, breathing practice is at the heart of Zen.
